- W129338540 abstract "The purpose of the study was to reach a closeunderstanding of villagers’ experience of change in the changingcontext of the Turkish Republic. The poetry books of two renownedliterary figures Mehmet Basaran and Talip Apaydin were studied toinvestigate villagers’ reactions and responses to various nationalchanges. The literary work of these poets provided a glimpse intothe experiences of both the poets and the villagers, and theircommunities’ reactions, with respect to continuing nationalchanges. These poets not only came from the same cultural villagebackground as the villagers, but had also been educated through theTurkish Village Institutes (TVI) literacy campaign. Theyexperienced the changes first-hand and moved into new roles as aresult of their TVI education. Their poetry was analyzed using thetheoretical/methodological frameworks of Critical DiscourseAnalysis (CDA). The analysis was complemented by a systematiccoding process to elicit emerging themes and patterns from thedata; this process entailed deciphering the linguistic propertiesof the text/discourse, as well as the various author/speakerchoices employed in the production of the poetic discourse. Theanalysis placed the poetic discourse in its various social, educational and political contexts to better understand itsmeaning. Four final themes emerged from my analysis of the poetrydata: (a) indifference of others to the problems of villagers; (b)a strong call to bring about a better and more just world; (c)feelings of homesickness; and (d) the power of art, especiallypoetry, as a means of critical analysis. These findings indicatedthat social changes only partially touched the lives of those inthe countryside and barely influenced the social relationships orthe living standards in the countryside. The poems called for thetaking of individual responsibility and working collectively tocreate a more equitable nation for future generations. Severalpoems also described instances of emotional turmoil due to feelingsof homesickness. These feelings referred to the TVI-educated poets’homesickness due to seeking careers in cities away from theirfamily and village cultures, in addition to the homesickness ofsome members of the village communities who had to work far awayfor the survival of their families. The fourth theme indicatedpoetry’s power in effectively voicing village realities to a largeraudience and envisioning a better future through its creativeexpression. In conclusion, poetry discourse is a living testamentto the experiences, hopes and goals of the TVI-educated poets andthe village communities they came from." @default.
