- W129456264 abstract "Under normal conditions, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) circulating in the blood adhere momentarily to the walls of blood vessels. During acute inflammatory processes, the number of PMN adhering to the endothelial lining is greatly increased. These adherent PMN eventually migrate out through the interendothelial junctions to the site of injury where they undertake their phagocytic functions. The basis for a clear understanding of the events involved and an appreciation of their significance was presented by Julius Cohnheim as early as 1889 (15). Since then, many investigators have described the process and provided further details (4–6, 14, 24). The factors which cause PMN to adhere at a particular location along the blood vessel near an injury and the mechanisms by which PMN attach to the blood vessel wall are not known, despite the fact that these initial events are decisive in the development of acute inflammatory responses." @default.
