- W129571489 abstract "This chapter discusses the obstructed venous outlet syndrome. The basic feature of the condition is the occlusion of a deep vein positioned at a bottleneck in venous return, that is to say, where the main venous return from the limb is channeled through a single deep vein with the only alternative of side-branches and superficial veins. Notable examples of this are the popliteal, common femoral, iliac, and axillary veins. Obstruction to any of these veins will of necessity cause side-channels to take over venous return from the limb below this level, in other words, to develop as collateral veins. These may be clearly visible or palpable but not always so and special means such as the Doppler flowmeter or functional phlebography may be needed to detect them. If the deep veins and pumping mechanisms below the obstruction are undamaged, the resting and exercising venous pressures below the block will be raised by the resistance to venous return. This causes an increase in the mean pressure without necessarily affecting the overall pattern in response to exercise. This general setting of pressure at a higher level encourages capillary transudation and collection of fluid in the tissue spaces. In this way, an obstructed venous outlet can cause edema without other venotensive changes." @default.
