- W129628343 abstract "This final report is submitted to fulfil the partial requirement of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at the school of Engineering and Information Technology at Murdoch University. The report is on a four months internship project undertaken at Smart Energy Holding LLC. at the University’s South Street campus. The internship project was on the development of a novel hysteresis current control on a DC-DC converter system for a Zinc Poly Bromide battery the company is developing to commercialize for utility scale use. The internship project encompassed various works. The initial phase was mainly focused on the construction and testing of individual electronic subsystems that constitute the power supply, measurement, protection, communication, and microcontroller boards among others. The later part of the project was mainly on writing and debugging of the controller program and running various tests to check, tune, and improve the various system settings. A series of test done on the system has shown an efficiency as high as 94% at some operating points. It is an appreciable efficiency given the fact that a cheap and lossy inductor is used in this process let alone losses incurred as a result of stray inductance and capacitances in the myriads of wires interconnecting the various subsystems. The closed loop PI controller implemented at the later part of the project has been shown to do the task of controlling the charging/discharging current at a remarkable degree of accuracy. With a predominantly proportional, and slight integral controller, it was able to achieve a stable, and reasonably accurate current regulation. A rise time less than 300 seconds and a settling time of less than 500 seconds was attained. This internship project has, to a large extent, produced a well performing DC-DC convertor system; and where there were deficiencies has provided pointers where corrections and changes need to be made in the next iteration in the prototyping process. Right at this moment a new PCB is being developed in China that takes into accouts the lessons learnt and builds upon the achievements of this prototyping phase. The PCB that is being developed is expected to resolve the pervasive noise problem in the relatively spread out construction of this first prototype, and all other issues picked up in this cycle of the process." @default.
