- W130147503 abstract "This chapter discusses the biotechnology of the photosynthetic enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (E.C.4.1.1.39) (Rubisco) because it relates to the possibility of improving photosynthetic yields by suppressing the process of photorespiration in plants. Photorespiration is manifested as a light-dependent consumption of oxygen and evolution of CO 2 by plants. It is generally accepted that the oxygen consumption step is catalyzed by Rubisco. Paradoxically, this enzyme is best known for its key role in the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis, in which it catalyzes the carboxylation of ribulose bisphosphate by CO 2 (consumption of CO 2 ), leading to the formation of two molecules of D-3-phosphoglycerate. Concomitantly oxygen is evolved by the plants because of the extraction of protons and electrons from water that are needed to reduce CO 2 to carbohydrate. The carboxylation of ribulose bisphosphate leads to a net gain of fixed carbon, but the oxygenation of ribulose bisphosphate not only undoes a carbon–carbon bond formed in a previous turn of the Calvin cycle, but also leads to the actual loss of fixed carbon as CO 2 ." @default.
