- W130147671 abstract "Bacilli and especially Bacillus subtilis have recently emerged as model organisms worthy of consideration when studying the molecular mechanisms of bacterial protein export. Several factors contribute to this. Most species of Bacillus have a high capacity to secrete many proteins, indicating a developed machinery of protein secretion that can be expected to be amenable to elucidation. Further technical advantage is provided by the structure of the gram-positive cell envelope, because of which exported proteins need to traverse only one membrane (the cytoplasmic membrane) to be exposed outside and finally released from the cell. In this respect protein secretion by gram-positive bacteria can even be considered analogous to that of eukaryotic cells, and may be different from that of Escherichia coli in an important way. Although E. coli has also served successfully as a model organism for research on protein secretion (Silhavy et al. 1983), the complicated structure of its cell envelope and the lack of true protein secretion across its two membranes are disadvantages compensated only by the enormous amount of basic knowledge of its cellular physiology, structure, and genetics.KeywordsSignal PeptideBacillus SubtilisProtein SecretionCytoplasmic MembraneOuter Membrane ProteinThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
