- W130183408 abstract "Clinical observations have distinguished several types of epilepsy, with seizures predominantly occurring in nonrapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) and others at transition states of vigilance. Beyond statistics of occurrence, however, the mechanistic relationships between sleep and epilepsy have proven difficult to explain, since they are complex, bidirectional, and dependent on both the type of epilepsy and the sleep stage (or even more detailed characteristics of sleep). Recent advances have been made in our understanding of mechanisms underlying specific sleep-related genetic aberrations, of very low- and high-frequency electroencephalography oscillations, of neuronal disfacilitation, of bistability states, and of synaptic plasticity, which may augment excitability and synchronization and so aggravate seizures. These insights should lead to enhanced understanding of the relationship between sleep and seizure expression." @default.
