- W130492227 abstract "Care of persons with mental disorders has changed radically over the last 200 years, from a situation of exclusion in special institutions to the current approach of care in the community. There is emphasis today on the individual’s quality of life. Another development of importance is the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (2006) which urges full community participation. In this emerging scenario, career development becomes an important new addition. Of the mental disorders, severe psychoses like schizophrenia and depression typically have their onset during late adolescence or young adulthood when the individual’s educational (and thereby career) foundations are laid. The barriers to career development arise mainly from the social stigma that surrounds mental illness, a misplaced emphasis on disability, lost time during the illness period, and the residual effects of illness and at times its treatment; each of these affects motivation as well as cognitive and social skills. Although the potential effect that career guidance can have is clear, models and methods of career development services for the recovering mentally ill are poorly articulated. Career development professionals have to be fully equipped to understand the manifestation and treatment of different mental disorders, and, based on this knowledge, develop measures that would offer concrete career development pathways for this client group. This chapter brings focus to bear on the interface between three disciplines: psychology, psychiatry, and career guidance and counseling in order to understand the career development needs of the mentally ill. Our main objectives are to inform the discipline of career counseling of the characteristics and features of mental illness, examine the issues that surround the career development of those who have been affected, and then outline key factors that could be considered both for research and practice. Career counseling has not yet been integrated into the rehabilitation models in vogue for the mentally ill. The chapter provides an overview of the systems, structures, and resources that are already available around the mentally ill person. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health is presented, along with case examples, as a conceptual framework for the career counseling of those recovering from mental illness. With a view to delineating a platform upon which career counseling services could be made relevant, in this chapter we describe two successful approaches to the reintegration of the mentally ill into the world of work: supported education and supported employment. The purpose of presenting this information is twofold. The first is to orient the career counselor to the support structures that are in place and could be adapted. The second is to signpost various points at which the career counselor could begin to introduce career guidance services for the mentally ill." @default.
