- W130902821 abstract "OTHER ITEMS ... Rejoinder: INSOLENT OUTBURST. (By Staff Correspondent A. Andreyev. Izvestia, April 10, p. 4. Complete text:) Tselinograd, April 9-Where am I? every art lover wonders after crossing the threshold of the territory drama theater in Tselinograd. ... And with good reason: The auditorium of the theater is painted in such gloomy colors that it resembles a prison cell. This is not the only fruit of the local architect V. Kolpikov's inventiveness. He was subjected to sharp criticism at the conference of Tselinograd creative workers, at which a wide-ranging discussion of literature and art took place, for serious errors and bungling in his work. ... Kolpikov spoke last. Instead of responding to the sharp but fair criticism, he started slinging mud at recognized masters of our art and praising the masterpieces of Neizvestny, of abstractionism and the abstractionists, in every way. ... The gathering waxed indignant: Get off the rostrum! A vote was taken. The show of hands favored depriving Kolpikov of the floor. But the conference presidium proposed: ... Let him speak his piece. ... Kolpikov continued his diatribe. He came out unreservedly and ignorantly against realism, the basic creative method of our literature and our art, and took up the defense of formalist eccentricities. ... Only at the insistent demand of the conference participants themselves did Kolpikov leave the rostrum. ... Unfortunately, he did not receive the rebuke he deserved. And there was no reason for him not to! People like Kolpikov, of course, can be counted literally on the fingers of one hand. All genuine masters of art are invariably guided in their creative work by the most advanced artistic method, the method of socialist realism, whose basis lies in Party spirit and kinship with the people. They decisively repudiate abstract affectations. That is all the more grounds for giving battle and not allowing these insolent sallies by individual unbridled art hooligans of Kolpikov's stamp. ... Meanwhile, the Tselinograd conference leaders showed inexplicable timidity and strange ineffectuality. S. Imashev, Secretary of the Virgin Land Territory Party Committee in charge of the ideological sector of work, saw fit not to speak up, to remain silent. N. Dzhandildin, Secretary of the Kazakhstan Communist Party Central Committee, did take the floor and start to criticize the insolent fellow, but only after the bird had flown the coop. ... Party principle and passion are immutable conditions for ideological work. It is necessary for people like Kolpikov to be aware of this constantly." @default.
