- W131286624 abstract "There is an increasing demand for sensitive and specific biological assays to be used in the assessment of effects of pollutants on natural populations of fish. The concept adopted in this research is that effects of pollutants start with a biochemical reaction in an individual organism. The detection of this primary interaction between toxicant and fish can serve as an early warning indicator and therefore be of maximum predictive value in terms of protection of the population. This chapter presents some concepts in health monitoring, criteria for health assays and the use of different biochemical and physiological methods in health assessment in fish. Furthermore, four selected assays are thoroughly discussed. These assays include assessment of (a) erythrocyte δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity, (b) induction of the hepatic mixed function oxidase system, (c) induction of metallothioneins, and (d) smoltification in salmonids. The potential of these assays as early warning indicators of environmental contaminants is discussed, as well as their present value as health assays for feral fish. Additional research needs for these assays are identified and the future development outlined." @default.
