- W13146910 abstract "Introduction. Based on its characteristic mineralogy, petrology, trace element concentrations and oxygen isotopic compositions Dar al Gani 476 has now been approved as the 13 member of the SNC meteorite clan [1]. Dar al Gani 476 is a basaltic shergottite consisting of large, up to several mm sized, olivine (Fa~40) embedded in a matrix of mostly pyroxene, diaplectic plagioclase glass, chromite, and other opaque phases. The mostly euhedral olivine crystals show irregular compositional zoning and a characteristic light brown colour. They contain numerous tiny chromites and rarely melt inclusions. In some cases assimilation of olivine by later magmatic processes is observed. The matrix is dominated by strongly zoned pigeonite and plagioclase glass (maskelynite) typically occurring interstitially between pyroxenes and chromites. Minor matrix phases are olivine, ilmenite, sulfides, and whitlockite. Additionally, the meteorite contains large brownish areas probably representing recrystallized shock melt. Dar al Gani 476 is heavily affected by secondary alteration processes. Nearly all phases contain numerous veins and pores filled with calcites and phyllosilicates. A more detailed petrographic description is given by [1]. Here we present results of our detailed study of shock metamorphic features in this meteorite. Method. Four demountable thin sections of Dar al Gani 476 were initially studied applying optical microscopy followed by scanning electron microscopy. After detailed petrographic studies, several areas were investigated with a Philips CM20 TEM equipped with a EDS detector. Results. As already visible at low magnification the meteorite appears highly fractured and affected by shock metamorphism. The following shock features were observed: Olivine. Optical inspection of the large olivines revealed a number of shock effects: (1) extremely strong mosaicism, (2) high density of planar and irregular fractures, (3) very fine planar deformations features typically extending only over a short distance and of irregular shape, (4) arrays of deformation bands which become only visible in crystals cut almost perpendicular to an optical axis. In one grain a melt inclusion was found displaced along a fracture and indicating a certain amount of shearing. TEM studies prove the extremely high degree of mosaicism and fracturing of olivine. According to high resolution TEM, the single domains are rotated by up to 65 degree with respect to each other. Electron diffraction pattern obtained from these areas show a strong asterism. Planar fractures were found to be orientated parallel to the low index planes (100), (010), and {130}. The degree of lattice misfit along the fractures is up to half a lattice plane (~ 0.5 nm; Fig. 1)." @default.
