- W131880304 abstract "This chapter discusses energy budgets in natural and agricultural ecosystems. Energy from the sun is essential for the survival of natural and agricultural ecosystems. Humanity escaped some of the limitations of the sun's annual energy budget by drawing on sunlight stored over millions of years in the form of fossil fuels. During the past 300 years, man has used some of this energy to increase (through increased food production and improved health) and maintain his ever-growing numbers. Because energy is a dominant force in natural communities, evolution in interdependent populations has been toward balanced supply–demand energy economies within their communities. The chapter analyzes some energy budgets of natural and agricultural ecosystems. It discusses the potential for surplus energy conversion from these systems for human use. The chapter presents an overview of agricultural ecosystems and energy used in food system." @default.
