- W132671503 abstract "Water is one of the key drivers of ecosystem processes and forest growth. In large parts of the world water is a limiting factor and determines the species distributions, productivity and risks to our forests. To mimic the behaviour of ecosystem processes forest ecosystem models have been developed. Such models allow the integration of different processes such as the water cycle to analyse and study ecosystem behaviour. One important issue of such exercises is the integration of processes acting at different temporal and spatial scales. The purpose of this paper is to discuss scaling issues important for deriving the water cycle in managed forests across Europe. Specifically it relates to how water-related processes may be integrated so that point or plot information may be generalised to large scale applications. After a general discussion on scaling issues four examples related to scaling water relations within forest management are presented: (i) groundwater infiltration and its impact on forest growth, (ii) water runoff from forest roads, (iii) catchment water yield modeling as it is related to forest cover and (iv) wildfire risk assessment." @default.
