- W132839467 abstract "This chapter reviews the development of mammalian embryo during preimplantation and earliest postimplantation stages as a basis for understanding developmental potency of the embryonic stem (ES) cells. During the first cleavage divisions, totipotent blastomeres of the mammalian embryo segregate and eventually become committed to the extraembryonic, somatic, and germ line lineages losing developmental potency. A number of basic questions on early mammalian development still remain unanswered. This is due to the small size of early mammalian embryos and the effort that is required to obtain them in the large numbers necessary. On the other hand, it is because implantation, through which the embryo establishes a physical connection with the mother, makes embryos relatively inaccessible. It has not been possible to mimic implantation in vitro or monitor these developmental stages in vivo. In lower vertebrates, the body axes are already specified in the undivided egg or very soon thereafter, whereas in mammalian embryos, axis specification was thought to occur during gastrulation. Recent studies, however, suggests that the mammalian zygote may in fact be polarized and the body axes specified at the time of fertilization, similar to lower vertebrates. Human gene expression first occurs between the four- and eight-cell stages of preimplantation development. Targeted disruption of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptor 2 suggests a role for FGF signaling in pregastrulation mammalian development." @default.
