- W132962437 abstract "The way in which professional counselors perceive or conceptualize clients and their presenting issues constitutes an outward expression of the counselors' philosophy, training and world view. These perceptions and conceptualizations directly or indirectly affect assessment, therapeutic methodology, and even client outcomes. This article presents a discussion of a professional orientation based on client strengths. This orientation, borrowed mostly from social work, has been suggested under related ideas by counseling theorists at various times in the past. The purpose of this article is to summarize the strengths perspective, to describe its philosophic underpinnings, and to illustrate its compatibility with counseling values. The strengths approach may serve to enhanco the professional counselors' opportunity to serve clients from the pe-spective of a human growth and development model. Contains 40 references.
