- W133388691 abstract "Melanocytic neoplasms are clonal proliferative growths of melanocytes forming benign and malignant tumors designated nevus and melanoma, respectively. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is thought to be a critical player in the development of melanocytic neoplasms. Established risk factors for developing melanocytic neoplasms are fair skin, light-colored eyes, sunburns – particularly during childhood – and indoor tanning salon use. Melanocytic neoplasms are frequently biopsied by dermatologists and general practitioners, thus constituting a common specimen in surgical pathology and dermatopathology services. Although the majority of melanocytic neoplasms can be classified accurately – clinically and histopathologically – some cases are difficult to precisely classify and remain a significant challenge, constituting a major proportion of referral consults to experts (e.g., spindle and epithelioid cell tumors known as Spitz tumors). What follows is an overview of the surgical pathology of the melanocytic nevus, representative nevus variants, and melanoma using clinical–pathological correlation to balance the technical details of surgical pathology." @default.
