- W133494886 abstract "First Secretary Vladimir, instigator of the bomb plot in The Secret Agent, escapes the repercussions of the blast physically intact and legally secure. Yet his diplomatic status cannot protect him from a second plot, which is being hatched even as the novel ends. This is the scandal promised by the Assistant Commissioner; the arriviste foreigner will be driven from 'the very highest society' in which he has become a 'favourite' (24). The last mention of Vladimir in the novel clearly implies the first stage of retribution; he is to lose his honorary membership of the Explorers' Club. The precise, if subdued, interest which the novel takes in Vladimir's fate is surprising for two reasons. In the first place, the narrative conspires with the 'popular sentiment' which it elsewhere discredits, producing a form of poetic justice apparently able to withstand the hard, disabusing ironies of the novel. Indeed, in this book of complex topography the narrative goes out of its way to secure justice. The intensifying drama in the Verloc household is interrupted by the tenth chapter in which the Assistant Commissioner confronts Vladimir and formulates the nature of his punishment. Only then is the reader returned to the Verlocs. But what is equally surprising is that the instrument of poetic justice is the Explorers' Club. This exclusive institution is mentioned only twice, near the beginning and again at the end of the tenth chapter. Although it epitomises certain aspects of 'Darkest London' ? the Clubland way of 'doing polities', xenophobia and the obsession with 'social purity' ? it also seems distanced from the prevailing energies of topophobia and degeneration. For the Assistant Commissioner, this memorial to the Victorian passion for exploration is an imaginative avenue to 'the risk and excitement of open-air sport'. It recalls a time of certitude and optimism, especially in that unexpected moment of Dickensian cheerfulness when it" @default.
