- W133610010 abstract "Microbial properties can be used for monitoring soil pollutants. Pollution by organic pollutants is generally more difficult to evaluate than inorganic pollutants because more of the former can enter the soil ecosystem. Pollutants or stresses that cause small or transient changes to the soil microflora and its activity should be distinguished from those that have more persistent and presumably more serious effects. No single microbial property can now be used universally for monitoring soil pollution. Microbial activity, such as microbial respiration, C and N mineralization, biological N2-fixation and some soil enzymes, can be measured as can the total soil microbial biomass. Combining microbial activity and population measurements (e.g. biomass specific respiration) might be more sensitive to soil pollution than either activity or population measurements alone. Measurements that have some form of “internal control”, e.g. biomass as a percentage of soil organic matter, might be advantageous as it might then be possible to determine if the natural ecosystem is being altered by pollutants without recourse to expensive and long-running field experiments. Finally, new applications of molecular biology to soil pollution studies (e.g. genetic fingerprinting) might also have considerable value in the future." @default.
