- W133635187 abstract "When I first arrived in Cracow at the end of 1948 to start my career as a graduate student, I was nearly 29 ? and beginning to feel I was desperately old. I had spent the previous two years in Poland as a member of the Anglo American Quaker Relief Mission, and had acquired a working knowledge of the Polish language. But on account of the war and its aftermath, an eight-year gap had intervened since my undergraduate career at Oxford. Would I, I wondered, really be able to settle down again to a life of study? The Cracow to which I now came had been spared the destruction the Nazis meted out to other historic cities in Poland like Warsaw or Poznan. Cracow's royal castle and its medieval cathedral, with the tombs of Poland's kings, still stood intact on the Wawel hill, and its spacious market square and Gothic town hall witnessed to the rich culture of its bourgeoisie. Above all, there was its university, the Jagiellonian, founded in 1364 and still a major center of Polish scholarship. Closed by the Nazis in 1939, when many of its professors had been imprisoned, the University reopened at the end of the war. Now, despite the postwar material hardships, and the increasingly ruthless Stalinist regime being imposed on the country, students and faculty alike looked hopefully to the future. It was, of course, to the University that I directed my steps after arrival; I had various formalities to proceed with there. I soon discovered there were decided advantages in declaring myself, officially, an undergraduate. For one thing, I would receive a student's card that gave me (among other privileges) free health service, access to the students' cafeteria, and reduced fares on the railways. Above all, it gave me official status as a student when I came to apply for a renewal of my visa ? or if I should have come to the special attention of the police. After enrolling, I became the proud possessor of an Index, the small booklet in which a student was required to record the courses attended and the results of exaniinations taken. Perusing its pages where I find titles of lectures attended" @default.
