- W133670593 abstract "We consider design in multicellular organisms from the perspective of environmental and internal constraints on body architecture. The significance of modularity (i.e., the sequential addition of iterative units), which dominates plant development, is assessed in relation to the fractal dimensions of plants, motile and sessile metazoans, and macroalgae. The iteration of modular units of plants and certain sessile animals reduces their fractal dimensions and maximizes their access to resources such as gases, light, and nutrients. Motile animals, with fractal dimensions close to 3, must forage within their environment to capture resources but develop internal structure of low fractal dimension such as tubes and ducts to maximize resource assimilation and distribution. Plant cell walls block the cell movements which are a hallmark of animal development; thus, in plants, cell death and cell separation during growth are key strategies that shape tissues and structures. We highlight these processes and assess the different fates of dead cells in plants and animals. These developmental processes have evolutionary consequences ranging from convergence of plant and sessile animal forms and the greater relevance of the inheritance of acquired characteristics in plants." @default.
