- W134016319 abstract "Pigment-dispersing hormones (PDHs) and pigment-dispersing factors (PDFs) make up a conserved family of signaling molecules thus far only identified from invertebrate sources. They all act on their respective G-protein-coupled receptors and can act both as neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Although PDF receptors are homologs of the vertebrate VPAC2 receptor, PDF sequences have never been found in vertebrates and only a functional homology to VIP has been described. In all invertebrate PDF systems studied, a clear role in the modulation of and response to environmental signals has been described. In crustaceans, PDH is an activator of rapid pigment dispersion in response to bright light. Insect PDFs, and possibly crustacean PDH, are of crucial importance to the endogenous biological clock that keeps track of the day/night rhythm. In nematodes, PDFs exert an overt role in the regulation of locomotion. This chapter summarizes the different invertebrate PDH-like signaling systems." @default.
