- W134048982 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the epidemiology of rickets and osteomalacia in the light of the classical model of these diseases as a product of either ultraviolet deprivation or of a lack of dietary vitamin D. The present western diet, characterized by the consumption of refined carbohydrate and high intakes of animal products—such as meat, meat products, and eggs—appears highly protective against rickets and osteomalacia. In the longterm, a degree of adaptation of the Asian community in Britain to such a diet should bring about a corresponding reduction in their incidence of rickets and osteomalacia. Evidence that the incidence of rickets in the Asian community has fallen by approximately half over a period of 16 years, while the incidence of osteomalacia has remained relatively constant, is consistent with this hypothesis. Personal observation suggests that second-generation Asian children in Britain are partially adapting to western diets, while first-generation Asian adults retain their traditional dietary habits. The changing incidence of Asian rickets in Britain supports the view that both marginal ultraviolet exposure and dietary factors determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in a given community or country. It seems likely that the present western diet has been the major factor in producing a rapid decline in the incidence of endemic late rickets and osteomalacia in the present century in Europe. The current occurrence of small pockets of vitamin D deficiency in certain communities in Europe and North America is associated with the habits of vegetarianism or lacto vegetarianism." @default.
