- W134311650 abstract "Mercuric chloride (CAS# 7487-94-7) is used in photography, wood preservatives, disinfectants, fungicide, and some pharmaceutical products. Gastrointestinal absorption of mercuric chloride from food is less than 15% in mice and ∼7% in a study of human volunteers. In humans and other mammals, the kidneys are the primary targets where mercuric ions accumulate and result in mercury-induced nephropathy. Although mercuric chloride is considered a possible human carcinogen (Class C), it is unequivocally carcinogenic to more than one rodent model. It is classified as extremely toxic, and all forms of mercury are poisonous if absorbed. As little as 0.1 g is enough to cause damage to body tissues, and 2 g can cause death in a 70 kg person. Mercury chloride is one of the most toxic salts of mercury. Central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and the kidneys are most vulnerable to its toxic effects. It is toxic by inhalation (dusts, etc.), ingestion, and skin absorption. Mercury in the pure metallic form is rather harmless, but the salt of the same substance, notably mercuric chloride, is a deadly poison. Chronic symptoms may include severe nervous disturbances, tremors, complaints of excessive salivation, loosening of teeth, and a dark line on gum margins." @default.
