- W134628110 abstract "ConclusionStudies with multiple methods, including behavioral, neuroimaging and pharmacological studies of healthy and brain damaged patients, have been used to provide converging evidence for the role of the PFC in cognition. One process thought to be subserved by the PFC, executive function, remains difficult to characterize, but progress is being made. The physiological basis of this process as well as other processes thought to be subserved by the PFC (such as working memory) are beginning to be mapped out, both on a neuroanatomical and neurochemical level. An improved understanding of the PFC function will make an important contribution to our goal of understanding the normal human brain. It will also have an important impact on our goal of using this knowledge to improve care of patients with damage to this region. Although many individuals with frontal lobe pathology perform well on standard neuropsychological tests, they often exhibit significant functional difficulties (Eslinger & Damasio, 1985; Shallice & Burgess, 1991). These practical difficulties, which seem to be caused by cognitive deficits in organization, planning, and goal integration, are likely due to impairments in the processes being investigated in our studies. Because incomplete recovery of prefrontal function prevents full re-integration into society, development of more effective treatment approaches for these patients, such as pharmacological intervention, will be an extremely important component of their care. Thus, our findings provide a foundation for potential therapies that may not only improve cognitive function in patients with prefrontal damage, but also may decrease the disability associated with those cognitive impairments." @default.
