- W134674741 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses wound tumor disease in plants. Wound tumor virus (WTV) is an example of a double-stranded RNA virus that consistently initiates tumors in eukaryotic cells and as such offers opportunities to discover the way by which such a virus induces and maintains tumor growth. In a study discusses in the chapter, when known plant hormones or hormone-like substances were applied to stems of plants infected with WTV, some of them stimulated tumor production. Similarly, treated control plants free of the virus did not produce such tumors. Of 24 substances tested, one was the naturally occurring plant hormone, that is, 3-indoleacetic acid; the others were synthetic hormone-like substances. The root tumors that arise in association with Rhizobium nodules are especially suggestive of hormone action. The root nodule starts externally to the endodermis and subsequently the tumor develops internally to it. It seems evident that some stimulus, such as a plant hormone, must pass from the nodule across the endodermis to initiate the tumor. A complete understanding of the molecular etiology of wound tumor would include not only functions of the macromolecules of virus and plant and their interactions but also of other molecules involved in the role of wounds and different hereditary tumor responses of plant clones." @default.
