- W135045568 abstract "Publisher Summary Catecholamines, norepinephrine in particular, play an important role in adaptation to environmental stresses like cold and hypoxia. Exposure of animals to hypoxia or cold causes stimulation of the sympatho-adrenal system and alters the metabolism of catecholamines accompanied by increased thermogenesis during cold exposure or decreased alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient in hypo baric hypoxia. The ability of animals for thermoregulation and the sensitivity of animals to drugs acting on central nervous system are also affected. The synthesis of catecholamines, derived from tyrosine, is controlled by the rate-limiting enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase, and the availability of tyrosine. A study on the changes in the metabolism of hypobaric hypoxia was undertaken. The major pathway for tyrosine metabolism besides incorporation into proteins involves degradation following transamination, catalyzed by tyrosine aminotransferase to phenolic products. In addition to dietary sources or of other protein-origin, tyrosine can also be obtained by hydroxylation of phenylalanine catalyzed by phenylalanine hydroxylase." @default.
