- W13564609 abstract "Previous studies of wetted media in thermal power plants have been limited to wet cooling towers or mechanical-draft dry cooling towers. This paper investigates the use of wetted media in Natural Draft Dry Cooling Towers (NDDCTs) for their performance improvement during hot and dry periods. As opposed to the case for mechanical-draft towers, the answer is not trivial because of the complex trade-off between the pressure drop and heat transfer in the governing equations of a NDDCT, which relies mainly on convective heat transfer to reject heat from the working fluid rather than evaporation. The performance of NDDCT is particularly reduced at high ambient temperatures. Wetted-medium evaporative pre-cooling can decrease the inlet air temperature of the heat exchanger and thus improves the heat rejection performance of NDDCT, but the pressure drop introduced by the media will hinder the air flow passing through the tower, which will then impair the tower heat rejection performance. This paper takes this trade-off into account to develop a MATLAB code to simulate the operation of NDDCTs with and without pre-cooling.Two types of wetted media (CELdek7060 and CELdek7090), each with two thicknesses (0.10 and 0.20m), were tried to pre-cool the tower inlet air. The ambient humidities were taken as 20% and 60% while the ambient temperature ranged from 10° to 50°C during simulation. Results show that NDDCT can benefit from pre-cooling with wetted media when the ambient air is hot and dry. It was found that there is a critical ambient temperature below which pre-cooling application does not benefit NDDCT performance. The value of this critical temperature is a function of the tower design, the selection of wetted media and air humidity. Amongst the studied media, CELdek7060 brings more benefit than CELdek7090. The water consumption of the pre-cooling systems and the costs of wetted media were also discussed." @default.
