- W135942893 abstract "Since the original work of JOHNSON et al [1] on tunable solid-state lasers on the basis of transition metal doped fluoride crystals much progress has been made in crystal growing technologies, laser technology and the understanding of the lasing properties of these vibronic laser materials. Also several new laser crystals-especially Cr(3+) doped systems — have been reported. A survey on actual cw-operated laser crystals is given in Fig. 1 together with the tuning range [2,3,4]. Information about oxide crystals may be found in reference [2,4]. The successful laser systems given in Fig. 1 only represent a very small selection of the large variety of candidates which not only may include simple cubic, fluoride crystals but also host crystals like Kryolites, Elpasolites or even fluoride garnets. These host crystals can be doped with transition metal ions from the 3d, 4d, 5d group. A large number of combinations has been investigated and evaluated with respect to their suitability as vibronic laser crystals. The main reasons for the relative low success rate are crystal growing difficulties, optical quality of the systems and also the fact that not all transition metal ions show reasonable emission properties in dielectric host crystals when located on undistorted or distorted octahedral site symmetry. Even combinations with excellent fluorescence properties fail because of excited state absorption or reabsorption processes.
