- W136606581 abstract "Πdgar Quinet (1803-75) occupies a special position in any discussion of orientalism in France during the Romantic period, for it was he who popularised the notion of the Oriental Renaissance. He used the expression as the title of a key section of one of his major works, Du genie des religions1. Quinet was of course not alone in his enthusiasm for the East. In the classic study which he devoted to the subject, Raymond Schwab described in detail the various strands which came together to form the Oriental Renaissance and which contributed to its significance as a Europe-wide cultural phenomenon.2 Schwab who borrowed the title of his own study from Quinet lists numerous French Romantic writers, thinkers and intellectuals who developed an interest in the Orient. These include Hugo, Nerval, Michelet, Leconte de Lisle, Lamartine, Ampere and Ballanche. He also draws attention to the extent to which French scholarship advanced Western knowledge of oriental languages, religions and literatures. He reminds us of the crucial contributions made by Anquetil-Duperron and Champollion, but he also cites the work of Abel Remusat, A.-L. de Chezy, Guillaume Pauthier, Eugene Burnouf and others. The strength of Schwab's book lies in the way in which it combines an extensive knowledge of the responses to oriental cultures which emerged across Europe in the early nineteenth century, with a warmly sympathetic understanding of the uses to which creative writers and adventurous thinkers were willing to put this new knowledge. Schwab pays particular attention to Quinet's role, underscoring the extent to which his interest in the East was inscribed within his ambivalent relationship towards Germany and to German thought. This is an important point since the Orient took on added prestige and authority when mediated through German academic culture (see Gerard). During the Restoration a new generation of Frenchmen followed the example set by Mme de Stael and looked across the Rhine for inspiration and illumination. Thus in 1817 the philosopher Victor Cousin travelled to Germany and had his celebrated meeting with Hegel.3 There was a perception, widely shared among younger French thinkers, writers and critics men such as Quinet," @default.
