- W136615900 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the cells in the developing embryo that interact with one another and communicate by means of long-range and short-range signals and how such cell interactions play a crucial role in differentiation and morphogenesis. Cell–cell interactions represent only one in a spectrum of mechanisms controlling embryonic differentiation; however, their role and nature have been attracting increasing interest because of the growing awareness of their importance. The need for precision in cell communication is greatest in the morphogenesis and differentiation of the nervous system, where even localized perturbations in cell relationships can have potentially profound consequences on the functionality of the whole system. Several kinds of mechanisms for cell–cell communication in development have been suggested. Some of these mechanisms depend on metabolic cell cooperation—that is, one-way transfer or two-way exchange among the cells of precursor substances or regulatory metabolites. The chapter also discusses the cell interactions that play an important role in the organization and biochemical differentiation of cells in the embryonic nervous system." @default.
