In Australia,modification of land cover since European settlementhas largely been due to land clearing and weedinvasion, as well as to some natural disturbances suchas bushfire. In the Strzelecki Ranges, located in southeastern Victoria, the wide scale of land clearing,subsequent agricultural abandonment and fires haveall resulted in severe landscape disturbance in theRanges. Land use and land cover have undergonefurther significant changes with the establishment oflarge scale plantations in the area over the last fourdecades. However, details of land use and land coverchange and its influence on the rainforest in this areais unknown.The Strzelecki Ranges, along with the southernuplands of the Otways, the Central Highlands, andEast Gippsland, are recognised as one of the fourmajor Victorian areas which support cool temperaterainforest ecosystems. Cool temperate rainforest,although now very restricted in its distribution, is ofmajor historical and ecological significance. Areasbordering cool temperate rainforest in the EasternStrzeleckis comprise a mosaic of different land usepatterns and have histories which are affected by bothnatural and human disturbances. Different land usepatterns have different influences on imbeddedremnant patches of cool temperate rainforest mainlythrough edge effects. When the surroundinglandscape patterns change, the environmentalconditions (e.g. microclimate) produced along theseedges (the boundaries between surrounding forestsand the cool temperate forest) may be modified andinfluences the interior cool temperate forest(Murcia, 1995; Bannerman, 1998).This study aims to model the long term land use andland cover changes (from 1954 to 2004) in theStrzelecki Ranges by integrating remote sensing andgeographical information system (GIS) and toprovide quantitative analysis of LUCC informationin the area. The reconstructed history of land useand land cover is mainly based on historical aerialphotography with the support of Vicmap Elevation,Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs) map andstereo models established by using stereo pair ofaerial photographs. Available archived historicalaerial photographs, taken in 1954, 1972 and 1988,were all scanned and converted to digital format fordigital photogrammetric processing. Scanned aerialphotos, together with digital colour aerial photostaken in 2004 were used for classification toidentify different land covers.The results show that land use and land cover in thestudy area changed substantially from 1954 to 2004.Large areas of cleared land and forest regrowth onpreviously cleared land were gradually converted toplantations. Wet forest cover kept increasing duringthis period, especially from 1954 to 1988. The areacovered by cool temperate rainforest has remainedrelatively stable throughout the period. Large scaleplantation, although not equivalent to native forestas wildlife habitat, may improve environmentalbalances (Lamb, 1998; Loyn, 2000; Cawsey andFreudenberger, 2003; Kanowski et al., 2003;Kanowski et al., 2005; MacHunter et al., 2006;Koskela et al., 2007) and provide refuges for wetforest and surrounded cool temperate rainforestfauna, especially in areas of severe disturbance likethat of our study area." @default.
