- W136750165 abstract "Lateral vibration of the magnetic medium in tape data storage applications misaligns the flexible medium relative to the recording head and reduces the potential for reducing data track width and spacing, and thereby the achievable data storage density. The recording head is, therefore, mounted on an actuation mechanism that 'tracks,' or compensates for, the lateral vibration in order to reduce the effect of the relative misalignment between the medium and the head. Such actuators can compensate for the vibration up to a frequency that is governed largely by their first mechanical resonance, and this bandwidth is typically 1 kHz or less for conventional voice coil-actuated systems. This paper introduces the design of a track-following actuator that is piezo-electrically actuated in order to achieve a significant increase of bandwidth up to several kHz. The design of the actuator emphasizes the decoupling of the intended motion from that in the orthogonal directions, balancing in the presence of the reaction force from the moving tape, and increase in mechanical resonance frequencies. A proof-of-concept is prototyped and the open-loop response is measured. A simple PID controller is simulated in order to estimate closed-loop performance in response to typical disturbances. Even with a basic controller design, the actuator can potentially achieve misalignment values or less than 100 nm." @default.
