- W137116193 abstract "When studying cell biology, students may do a series of experiments on pH, acids, bases, and buffers from a laboratory manual. One of these labs might deal with the titration of acetic acid and sodium chloride, and have students gently swirl the solution in a beaker throughout the experiment. What if one student mixes this solution a little too hard, causing it to splash into his or her eyes? In this case, the teacher should have had students wear personal protection equipment (PPE)--which includes gloves, aprons, and indirectly vented chemical-splash goggles--during the lab, even if the lab manual only contains general safety guidelines and does not specifically call for chemical-splash goggles. Despite the lab manual's directions, the teacher should have developed a safety plan that addressed the risks involved. Safety planning can help teachers learn to address issues such as this one. The main goal is to help science teachers meet their of care to students in the following ways: 1. Identify the specific risks that can put students in harm's way. 2. Assess whether the lab in the manual can be made safer by following best practices. 3. Provide for the appropriate engineering controls, administrative procedures, and PPE. 4. If the lab cannot be made safer, find out whether there are alternative activities available. In science classes and labs, it is the teacher's professional responsibility to ensure student safety by seeking out safety information that is independent of what is found in the lab manual and making informed judgments. When making decisions about lab procedures, teachers should consider their state's goggle statute for students, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) position papers on safety, and the NSTA Safety in the Science Classroom document (see On the web). Teachers must use their best professional judgment, given that they may be responsible--morally and legally--for the consequences of their actions should a safety failure occur. Science teachers are also responsible for teaching the safety rules that apply to student activities. Safety training must consist of a series of appropriate safety lessons--a drive-by approach will not work. Remember that the teacher has a of care to students: that of a reasonable person under the specific circumstance. In a situation like the one described here, that duty would include, among other things, the use of appropriate safety equipment--in this case, goggles, gloves, and an apron. …" @default.
