- W137237351 abstract "DURING the first part of the German occupation of Denmark, which lasted from April 9, 1940, to May 5, 1945, the Nazis attempted to make Denmark model protectorate, while the Danish Government fought a delaying action through what may at best be termed reluctant co-operation. During the last part of the occupation, initiated by the day of defiance, August 29, 1943, Denmark was in effect at war with Germany, with the guidance of the country in the hands of the Freedom Council organized by the Danish underground. It is to the everlasting credit of the resistance movement that this transition from passive appeasement to active opposition, effected through a brilliantly organized sabotage, took place. As a result, Denmark was given the status of an allied nation and after the war was able to assume its independence without the stigma of the Nazi satellites. The resistance movement would have been unthinkable without an underground press. As a matter of fact, at the very beginning the underground press was the resistance movement. Spiritual and intellectual opposition through the press was the first step in the fight against the Nazis. Never in the history of the nation had the facile words about the power of the press" @default.
