- W137265016 abstract "It is now accepted that certain chronic diseases of adulthood have fetal origins. It is less widely recognized that there remains substantial potential for nutritional programing of later disease risk during infancy and childhood. These may be mediated by different feeding regimes (especially breast-feeding vs artificial feeding) and by different growth trajectories. Research in this field is complicated by the fact that breast-feeding is strongly associated with maternal characteristics such as education and socio-economic status, which will impact on other aspects of a child's up-bringing that may themselves affect diseases of later life. Adults who were breastfed as infants tend to have lower cholesterol levels. There is evidence that early feeding patterns can affect later blood pressure, but breast-feeding does not appear to be strongly protective. Possible associations between breast-feeding and later obesity and diabetes require further research. Early postnatal growth trajectories are more strongly associated with adult disease outcomes and there is strong evidence that rapid postnatal growth can amplify the effects of retarded fetal growth." @default.
