- W137352763 abstract "A large number ofin vivoandin vitroexperiments have demonstrated that the three prototypes of calcium antagonists (nifedipine, diltiazem, and verapamil) during hypoxia delayed or prevented destruction of mitocondria and cell membranes, preserved energy-rich phosphates and the contractile function of heart muscle cells, and reduced infarct size [1]. The limitation of infarct size is most pronounced in small infarcts, in animals with a good collateral circulation, and if treatment is started prior to the occlusion [2 3]. Calcium antagonists also prevent ventricular arrhythmias following experimental coronary artery occlusion [4]. These effects may be explained by a reduction of intracellular Ca2+which may prevent ventricular arrhythmia, the negative inotropic effect, vasodilation, and improve left ventricular diastolic function during ischemia [1 5-7]. In clinical practice, the effect of postinfarct treatment with calcium antagonists on mortality, sudden death, and reinfarction depends on the balance between these mode of actions." @default.
