- W137408768 abstract "Use of vapor extraction as remedial technology has expanded rapidly, because it is simple and relatively easy to install using off-the-shelf equipment. The technology is flexible and can be implemented in subsurface or aboveground applications using one of several design options. Although contractors nationwide routinely install vapor extraction systems, a significant number of them have experienced serious difficulties in applying the technology. Problem systems are seemingly endless in their operation, and some ultimately have been closed by excavating remaining soil and disposing it offsite. Although the equipment involved is simple, the proper design, operation and monitoring of vapor extraction systems are not trivial matters. In practice, many system installations are based on the most readily available equipment and are field-engineered, rather than design-based. The predominance of trial-and-error installations has led to a significant number of vapor extraction installations that operate inefficiently or fail to work. The basic question of technical feasibility is complex and open to much uncertainty. Design criteria can be difficult to determine. Shallow groundwater can prevent effective system operation, and groundwater upwelling can cause contamination to spread to groundwater or groundwater to block the air flow in contaminated soils." @default.
