- W137476948 abstract "This chapter discusses the simple polyphenolic constituents of plants. The most common classes of polyphenolic constituents of plants are the flavonoid compounds and the hydroxycinnamic acids. The former contain fifteen carbon atoms, nine of which frequently consist of a hydroxycinnamic acid residue condensed with phloroglucinol. This residue is also the basic component of the lignin macromolecule. It is natural, therefore, to begin this account of the simple polyphenolic constituents of plants with the hydroxycinnamic acids and the forms in which they occur in plant tissues. In woody plants, tissues dependent upon nutrients translocated from the leaves are of two kinds: (1) permanent and (2) impermanent. Extreme examples of these are heartwood and petals, respectively. Although this has not yet been done, it should be easy to determine whether any of the polyphenolic constituents of petals are formed from phenolic precursors reaching them via the vessels of the peduncle. The same is true of the polyphenols of wood, but it is less easy to prove. The polyphenolic constituents are formed from simple precursors in the particular cells where they occur." @default.
