- W137481624 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the evolution of an enzyme. The results gathered from various sources of comparative studies on the primary structure of specific proteins have provided the raw material for speculations on the nature of the variations that have occurred at the biochemical level during evolution. Such speculations invoke the notion that mutations, leading to alterations in the specificity or in the stability of proteins, are preserved or eliminated by natural selective forces. This notion is based on the knowledge from studies on gene–enzyme relationships that mutations can lead to alteration of substrate affinities, thermolability, sensitivity to metal ions, and antigenic structure of specific proteins or enzymes. The interactions between distinct polypeptide chains are important in the expression of enzyme activities." @default.
