- W137492441 abstract "During the Golden Age of Spanish literature the burgeoning activity of playwrights was matched by a constant demand from the reading public for printed plays. Spanish printers of the seventeenth century responded to this challenge with the comedia suelta ('loose play'), consisting of the printed text of a single play, usually in quarto format, which could be sold either singly, or by the dozen for binding later. Comedias sueltas remained popular long after the creative impetus of the Golden Age had died, and they were printed more or less in their traditional form until well into the nineteenth century. Anyone editing a Spanish play from the boom period of the comedia suelta (e. 1620-1820) is faced with considerable problems deriving from the very popularity of the type of publication. Plays by a well-known dramatist would be printed many times, perhaps tens of times, in suelta form, so their textual histories tend to be long and involved. The late Professor Edward M. Wilson first saw the need to apply modern bibliographical techniques to the description and study of comedias sueltas} Many sueltas bear no imprint; many more are undated. However, an indication of their age and origin is often to be found in a printer's serial number. Once the steady demand for dramatic texts had been established, printers frequently issued their sueltas in a numbered series. We can easily imagine why they did so: they could retrieve a particular play from their stock more conveniently by reference to a number than by looking for a specific title. In all the sueltas I have seen with a serial number, it is printed above the head-title {sueltas rarely have a title-page), and in this position can easily be seen if one searches quickly through a bundle of sueltas. At present the serial number of an undated suelta is no more than a clue to what its date might be, for the ways in which printers assigned numbers in their series are not fully understood. When the principles behind the sequences have been established, bibliographers will perhaps be able to infer far more from the serial number. Towards an understanding of numbered series of sueltas I have examined three series produced by Antonio Sanz of Madrid, a prolific printer of sueltas during the eighteenth century. Antonio Sanz was probably the grandson of Francisco Sanz, who from 1682 to 1691 printed the edition by Juan de Vera Tassis of the plays of Calderon. After Francisco Sanz's death around the year 1700, his premises off the Calle de la Paz were occupied successively by Juan and Antonio Sanz2. Antonio Sanz began printing around 1 728.3 He seems to have begun printing comedias sueltas in 1729: he consistently dates his work and I have seen no sueltas printed earlier by him. His early sueltas are arranged in a numbered series, and from the catalogues of suelta collections in various libraries this early series can be reconstructed, in part, as follows:4" @default.
