- W137493012 abstract "Molecular size distributions for asphaltenes and maltenes from a series of petroleum residua have been determined using analytical and preparative scale gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A comparison of the molecular size distributions to the pore size distribution of a small pore desulfurization catalyst showed the importance of the catalyst pore size in efficient residuum desulfurization. Differences between the mean sulfur-weighted asphaltene molecular size and the mean metal-weighted molecular size for the residua examined helped to explain reported variations in demetaliation and desulfurization selectivities. The GPC technique was also used to monitor effects of both thermal and catalytic processing on the asphaltene size distributions. Finally, a comparison of the molecular sizes weighted by sulfur, nickel, and vanadium concentration for the six residua showed significant differences and suggested that the various charge stocks have undergone different formation and/or maturation processes." @default.
