- W137642460 abstract "Mr. Nader feels that the energy choices for the immediate future clearly are not limited to nuclear vs. coal, and if they were, nuclear would lose. The first reason, he states, is that the problems of coal power are technical in nature, while the problems of nuclear are institutionally serious as well as technically unresolved; for example, nuclear power tempts saboteurs, terrorists, and hostile nations; it will strain civil liberties; it will require massive measures of government-financed corporate socialism; it will burden future generations; and it will require incredible stability in human nature and human institutions if its present radioactive inventory and future garbage are to be controlled. The second reason nuclear power must be rejected, according to Mr. Nader, is its social ramifications as a technology; the adverse reactions of the citizenry to catastrophic accidents are suggested. Only when all issues are recognized can one engage in a rational and reasoned policy deliberation, Mr. Nader states; when only some of these issues are conceded, it is realized that the decision on nuclear power must be made by an entire enlightened population, not by delegated authority. In reaching these conclusions, Mr. Nader reviews such things as: the incompleteness of themore » Reactor Safety Study (WASH-1400); the financial insufficiency of the Price-Anderson Act; the bare economics of nuclear power; and alternative energy sources. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, publishers of Mechanical Engineering, while not making a detailed rebuttal of Mr. Nader's article, includes a postscript here that specifically challenges many of the points he makes.
