- W137667020 abstract "The Azorean Portuguese immigrants to the United States tend to settle by island of origin in United States communities. As a group, they remain isolated, are slow to learn English, and tend to resist assimilating to the culture of the United States. Their traditionalism has been linked to the flawed school performance of their children when the goals of United States education conflict with traditional values that stress hard work and family loyalty. A number of types of data are presented to produce a comprehensive profile of life in an Azorean Portuguese community in a southern New England industrial city. These include Kinetic family and school drawings gathered from a sample of Azorean Portuguese children, interview material from parents of these children, field observations of daily life in the community and two islands of the Azores, and information obtained from community leaders. Analysis of the data shows that the Azorean resistance to assimilation is reinforced by familism and the work ethic that others have shown contribute to school failure and a high drop-out rate among Azorean children. However, this resistance to assimilation serves also to create and sustain a multi-class culture in a traditionally two-class island culture undergoing continuing emigration and threatened population depletion. It serves as well to help the immigrants avoid the demoralization felt by so many ethnic groups when forced to assimilate rapidly. It is suggested that further research into Azorean communities in the United States might contribute to the understanding of how two-class peasant societies change with constant migratory movement between them and industrialized receiving cultures. As worldwide migratory patterns change and are affected by cheap air travel available to many people, this study serves as a model for understanding changes in class structure as they happen. In a time when traditional values are being challenged all over the world, the Azorean peasant represents a cultural struggle for belief and commitment in the face of change as well as the enormous human potential for flexibility and accommodation to the demands of modern life." @default.
