- W138202287 abstract "The years of our life are threescore and ten, Or even by reason of strength fourscore . . . Psalm 90, vs. 10 (RSV) WHATEVER THE SCORE, three or four or more, almost every day of those years marks an observance that may be commemorated with a Hallmark card. In fact, Hallmark may have manufactured many of them in order to create its own market, which, in turn, probably is eroded by a proliferation of e-cards, in a kind of retributive justice. Some designated observances seem downright ludicrous. Personally, I take no particular delight in International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19), coming from the Midwest where some dialects already approach that sound, or Mole Day (October 23), since we celebrate another tunneling critter on February 2. Until I learned upon investigation that treating pages of Journal of Singing with a waterproof laminate was prohibitively expensive, I showed mild interest in Read in the Bathtub Day (February 9). Seemingly frivolous, National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (January 26) actually finds some resonance with an editor who needs regularly to ship fragile materials to his graphic artist. Needing little further stimulus to a seething magma of Calvinistic guilt, I relegate Organize Your Home Office Day (March 10) to the metaphoric pyre. Universal Music Day (October 9) sounds very interesting, and, one would think, of considerable significance to musicians everywhere, but it apparently passes largely unobserved. All professional and amateur music makers, of course, should note St. Cecilia's Feast Day (November 22), perhaps with a performance of a Purcell, Handel, or Britten ode or hymn to the patron saint of music. That there is no National Editor's Day I find simply scandalous, and I have determined to celebrate it locally-and likely very alone. April I would seem an appropriate date. A few years ago, Carl Swanson alerted me to National Punctuation Day (September 24). Readers familiar with my devotion to the comma and abhorrence of the hyphen will not be surprised to learn that I mark the day on my desk calendar for annual obeisance. Most commemorations I ignore, some I observe, but one I honor: World Voice Day (April 16). Its importance may be at least partially indicated by the prominent announcement on the cover of this issue, a departure that has occurred only once before since the redesign of JOS, namely, the Richard Miller Festschrift edition (January/February 2007). Its significance is further underscored by Dr. Sataloff's second column on the event that appears in this issue.1 Interestingly, World Voice Day is not an American phenomenon; rather, it results from an initiative of a joint group of physicians, speech-language pathologists, and singing teachers in charge of the former Brazilian Society of Laryngology and Voice.2 It is widely celebrated, but, lamentably, principally within the medical and speech-language communities. It appears that fewer singers and singing teachers are aware of World Voice Day than I had anticipated. need to change that and broaden its application to all voice practitioners. Since the theme for WVD 2011 is We Share A Voice, it seems appropriate to commemorate the event by sharing our voices. …" @default.
