- W138728730 abstract "The two poems which I propose to discuss here were composed, I believe, sometime between late 1603 and the summer of 1607. The putative author of the first poem, Cu Chonnacht Og Mag Uidhir, Lord of Fermanagh, having left Ireland, reached Brussels about Whitsun, 1607, and only returned in September with the ship in which he and Aodh O Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rudhraighe O Domhnaill, Earl of Tirconnell, and their followers almost immedi ately sailed for the Continent. That poem was apparently addressed to Lady Brighid Fitzgerald of Maynooth, Co. Kildare, the putative author of the second poem. Brighid married Rudhraighe O Domhnaill soon after 29 September 1603.1 It is not possible to state categorically that Mag Uidhir had no contact with Brighid before her marriage, but it seems unlikely. In any case the terminus a quo cannot be seriously wrong, for at the time of her marriage Brighid was not yet fourteen years old2 and it is difficult to imagine Mag Uidhir engaging in poetic dialogue, however lacking in seriousness, with an eleven or twelve year old girl. The early years of the seventeenth century were extremely turbu lent for Cu Chonnacht Og Mag Uidhir. He had become chief of the name in succession to his stepbrother, Aodh, in March, 1600, and during the remaining years of Aodh O Neill's resistance to the Elizabethan conquest was his staunch ally. In the great expedition to Munster in the winter of 1601-2 he led a considerable force. It is said that his infantry was decimated at the battle of Kinsale, but he managed to return to the north in safety. Later in 1602 attempts were made to detach him from O Neill and he seems to have" @default.
