In terms of renal transport, the organic acids are considered to encompass a diverse group of exogenous compounds — for example, para-aminohippurate (PAH) and phenolsulfonphthalein (PSP, phenol red) — that exist as anions at physiological pH and that apparently share a common transport system for net secretion.
