- W13892785 abstract "The degree to which governments can or should intervene in the private sphere of family life is an extremely sensitive issue for modern, liberal democratic states, not least because the history of state intervention in the family shows that policy makers and professional experts have made gendered assumptions about the part that men and women play in family life. Arguments regarding state regulation, the family and gender have been complicated and have crossed party-political lines. Some have argued that the modern welfare state has increased social surveillance, while others, focusing more on the law of marriage and divorce, have stressed the extent to which private life has been deregulated. This is in turn believed by many to have underpinned rapid family change. Public policy and family law have historically imposed two powerful prescriptive frameworks in respect of family life. On the one hand, the male breadwinner family model has assumed the existence of a two-parent family model in which men will earn and women will care, while on the other hand, family law has embodied a strict moral code which has resulted in the stigmatizing of divorce and extramarital births. The erosion of these two frameworks in the late twentieth century has meant increasingly that people must negotiate their own solutions. Facing the profound changes in family life, governments must decide whether to recognize the changes and work with them, or whether to seek to put the clock back and to bolster the traditional family." @default.
