• W139554626 abstract "We have investigated the role of different parameters, concerning both the substrate (surface structure and anisotropy) and the deposit (coverage 9, structure and morphology), on the diffusion of Pb on Cu. Pb and Cu are not miscible in bulk; however, surface alloying is observed, in particular at low coverage. The growth is of the “Stranski-Krastanov” type. Above saturation coverage θs, three-dimensional (3D) Pb islands form on top of a Pb wetting single layer. We have studied experimentally the spreading of Pb deposits, using various techniques. The results were interpreted through analytical models and confronted to molecular dynamics simulations. We find that for isolated Pb atoms, diffusion takes place both through jumps of Pb adatoms and exchange with surface Cu atoms. Increasing the Pb coverage towards θs, we observe that Pb diffusion depends strongly on θ, evidencing the influence of Pb-Pb interactions. The appearance of ordered structures markedly affects the chemical diffusion coefficient. Above θs, the structure and morphology of the wetting layer influences Pb diffusion." @default.
