- W139723669 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of several important conditions that are encountered within the field of pediatric surgery. The field of pediatric surgery is wide-ranging and the new knowledge afforded by the advent of more sophisticated tools in molecular biology and physiology has heralded an unprecedented effort in pediatric surgical basic science investigation. Biliary atresia is a disorder of infants in which there is obliteration or discontinuity of the extrahepatic biliary system, resulting in obstructed bile flow. Untreated, the cholestasis leads to unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and death. Biliary atresia has an incidence of one in 10,000 live births and represents the most common indication for liver transplantation in children. Despite the improved survival of children with biliary atresia following transplantation, the pathogenesis of this condition is poorly understood. Multiple theories have been presented to account for the varied spectrum of pathology seen in these patients, ranging from congenital malformation of the bile ducts to the presence of a causative infectious agent. Because of this lack of understanding, the models utilized to study this disease are varied and diverse." @default.
