- W139816221 abstract "The five atom nido series, B 5 H 9 , B 4 H 8 Fe(CO) 3 and B 3 H 7 Fe 2 (CO) 6 has been used to explore in a systematic fashion the consequences of replacing one or two B-H fragments with Fe(CO) 3 fragments. Equivalence of the B-H and Fe(CO) 3 fragments (the “borane analogy”) is tested with this series of compounds on three different levels: geometry, filled molecular orbital structure, and photochemical behavior. In terms of geometry, B-H and Fe(CO) 3 are equivalent for both the mono- and di-iron compounds. On the other hand, the uv photoelectron spectra of these compounds, though revealing similarities between B 5 H 9 and B 4 H 8 Fe(CO) 3 in terms of cluster bonding, emphasize significant changes resulting from the introduction of one and two Fe(CO) 3 fragments into the cluster. Finally, it is demonstrated that the light sensitivity of B 4 H 8 Fe(CO) 3 provides a photochemical method for the preparation of new, unusual carboranes." @default.
